Causes of WW1: Militarism Alliances Nationalism Imperialism Assassination 2 sides: Allies: Great Britain, Italy, Russia, and France (USA joined 1917) Central Powers: Germany, Bulgaria, Austria Hungry, and Ottoman Empire Trench Warfare: -Not very effective -Floods, diseases, boredom, cramped, death, dirty, easy target, ect… -Approximately 40 million died New Warfare & Advanced Technology -machine guns -chemical warfare -airplanes -bombs -tanks -motorized vehicles -grenades -gas mask Effects of WW1 -Border changes -Government changes (communism in Russia) -Countries lost power and possessions -Rulers lost power -Russia Revolted and changed to communism -Economic hardships and debts= the Great Depression -Small countries gained independence or were joined with larger countries -Break up of large countries and empires -Death and devastation -Influenced future World War 2 League of Nations (1920) -Established to keep the world peaceful -Failed because there was no way to enforce the decisions *USA opposed because they wanted to stay neutral and didn’t want to be involved in European government Treaty of Versailles (1919) -Harsh conditions on Germany - Germany had to decrease military size, reparations, take the blame for the war, give up some of land gained during the war *USA opposed because we wanted to remain neutral and wanted fighting to end and peace to be established Be familiar with how countries in Europe changed following WWI because there will be a map portion on the test.
